What brought you to New Zealand?
When I was 18, I made the decision to spend 2 years studying the Bible with Word of Life in the States. I had no intention of going into ministry full time, but didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life and knew that developing a Biblical foundation would be a good start!
It was during those two years that the Lord began working in my heart to see people the way He did - lost and in need of a Saviour. I decided that I would take the bold leap of doing a cross cultural internship with Word of Life while getting my degree in graphic design to use my love of art for God’s glory. I was connected with Word of Life New Zealand as they were looking for a designer to join the team. I prepared to start my two year internship in January of 2021, but due to Covid travel restrictions, I was never able to join the team. I didn’t want to waste my time waiting, so I began working for Word of Life in Florida and pursued my design degree, all while still keeping in touch with New Zealand and still praying about joining the team at a later date.
Almost four years later, I was finally able to move from Florida to New Zealand and join the team as their graphic designer in June of this year! Through this very long journey, the biggest thing I learned was more about God’s character.
So often I felt like I was praying for God’s provision, that I forgot that I was actually living in it everyday, no matter which country I was in. The waiting process is tedious, weary, and often discouraging, but God not only has a perfect plan for each of us, He also has a perfect timing. The biggest thing I felt that the Lord was telling me through those years, was not that His answer was ‘no’, but that He was just saying “not yet”, and I had to learn to let go of my agenda and to trust Him.
What have you enjoyed most about living in New Zealand?
The people, for sure! It has been so fun living in another country. It has been so special to be able to experience the global Church, since most people really only get to experience church in their home country or city. It has been so neat to see that despite the cultural differences, I still have family no matter where I am through my brothers and sisters in Christ. I’m constantly seeing God in a new way through my Church family in New Zealand.
(And meat pies are always a plus!)
What are your future plans?
Originally, I was planning on being in New Zealand for two years, but through the long journey of working to be here, I feel even stronger that this is where the Lord has me for the long-term! Currently, I don’t have a timeline of how long I will be in New Zealand, but am really enjoying getting settled into my new role and new home. I can see myself being here for a long time.
Do you have any prayer requests?
I would love prayer as I continue to adapt to a new life and build a good community here in New Zealand. I am fully support based, so I am praying to be fully funded to be able to stay and serve on the team long-term.
